The Penn State Nittany Lions men’s hockey team wore special edition uniforms and looked to create whiteout conditions for their opponents over the weekend.
The Nittany Lions unveiled their uniforms for the annual Wear White Game on Friday, March 6, then wore them the same night when they hosted the Wisconsin Badgers at Pegula Ice Arena in the regular season finale. The uniforms have been “reinterpreted in a modern way”. gray alternate jersey From 2013 to 2017, Penn State wore pieces that were “designed to pursue a clean, modern aesthetic while honoring tradition,” according to a press release.
The focal point of the white jersey is the rounded crest on the front, which features the school’s traditional lion head logo within two gray circles with navy blue lettering between them. “PENN STATE” at the top and “NITTANY LIONS” at the bottom. The emblem was on two gray horizontal stripes across the chest.
The two gray chest stripes did not extend to the back of the jersey, but also appeared on the sleeves and socks. Narrow navy stripes decorate the hem and sleeve cuffs.
The jersey and matching pants were gray with navy blue and white diamonds on the sides. The diamond “is a nod to the throwback end zone designs of Penn State football’s past, tying together traditions throughout the athletics program.” The shoulder patches were also diamond shaped and had the gray “PSU” initials outlined in navy blue.
The numbers on the back and sleeves were gray with a navy blue outline and the names on the back were navy with a gray plaque. The captain and assistant captain had white letters outlined in navy blue within a gray diamond on the front of their uniforms.
The uniforms were worn Friday with white gloves and Penn State’s traditional white helmet with a single navy blue stripe down the middle.
However, the uniforms did not have the desired effect as the Nittany Lions were dazzled by the Badgers, losing 5-2. The loss snapped Penn State’s four-game winning streak in Wear White games.
The Nittany Lions’ next game is a Big Ten quarterfinal home game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Wednesday, March 11 at Pegula Ice Arena.
