LGES is holding a grand opening for a new battery factory in Canada

South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solutions (LGES) announced that its Canadian subsidiary, NextStar Energy, held a grand opening ceremony for its newly constructed battery manufacturing facility in Windsor, Ontario. Commercial operations at the factory actually began in November 2025, with production already exceeding one million battery cells.

NextStar Energy CEO Denise Lee, LGES CEO David Kim, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Industry Canada Minister Melanie Joly, along with a number of local government and community leaders attended the grand opening.

LGES claims NextStar Energy is Canada’s “first and only commercial-scale advanced battery manufacturing company.” It was originally formed as a joint venture with Stellantis, but the automaker completed the sale of its 49% stake in the company last month, following mounting losses and the withdrawal of incentives by the US government last year amid a sharp slowdown in US battery electric vehicle (BEV) demand. This left LGES in full control of the company.

The CAD 5 billion plant, which currently employs 1,300 people, focuses on supplying batteries for electric vehicles and next-generation energy storage systems (ESS), which are being built “to support the next wave of economic growth” in the country. The company is positioning itself as Canada’s leading provider of battery cells that power everything from AI data centers to municipal and provincial utility grids, as well as the e-commerce and technology infrastructure that Canadians across the country rely on.

Denise Lee said in a statement: “Today’s grand opening reflects the economic momentum we’re building here in Windsor. With strong investment from the federal and provincial governments and the commitment of our founding partners, we’re proud to create long-term economic value for Canada. At the same time, we’re helping the next generation of energy that will be the future proof of Canadian industry. It’s a success story that we can be a uniquely Canadian industry. Proud.”
