SEC Tournament Analysis: Florida, Arkansas lead chase

The SEC Tournament is no longer the Kentucky Invitational, but it’s still incredibly popular in 2026. After a slow start to the season, the defending SEC and national champion Florida Gators look like one of the best teams in the country.

They don’t have a player of the caliber of Walter Clayton to carry them in big moments, but they still have the best frontcourt in the conference with Thomas Ho and Alex Condon who can take over the game. Transfers Xavien Lee and Boogie Fland have been playing their best basketball lately, and if they’re playing well, good luck beating Florida.

The rest of the meeting is much tighter. Among other conference competitors, there are two tiers. Tier 1 has Alabama, Tennessee and Arkansas and they are serious contenders, while Vanderbilt and Kentucky have won big games but are much more flawed.

Bama might be the most entertaining team in college basketball. Their offensive rating is 3rd and their defensive rating is 68th. They went a million miles per hour, scored the most points in the country, and entered the SEC Tournament winning nine of their last 10 games. Labaron Philon Jr. is one of the best players in the country and exactly the type of player you want leading your team in March. Nate Oats has had some great teams lately and this one has taken a step back but is still a big bet at +700.

Why Arkansas Is Best for the SEC Tournament

The Tide may be the most entertaining team in the country, but Arkansas is the best bet for the tournament.

Freshman Darius Acuff Jr. will be a lottery pick in a few months, leading what I believe is the most underrated Razorback team in the country. John Calipari has settled in at Arkansas in his second year and has a team that can beat anyone in the country.

They can avoid Florida until they play for the championship and that’s why I like them at +900. Arkansas may have trouble defending big lineups and will avoid some of the conference’s best bigs, including Florida and Tennessee’s Nick Ament, until a potential championship matchup. Additionally, it’s always going to be difficult to bet against a Cal coach in the SEC tournament.

As for Coach Cal, his former team is starting to get a little underrated. The Wildcats are +3000 to win in the SEC because of their inconsistency. Will we see a Kentucky team that swept Tennessee this year, or will we see a Kentucky team run from the floor by Vandy?

With both teams from Tennessee, I’m not really happy with either of them. These two are opposites of each other. Vandy has a strong offense with a solid defense, and Tennessee has a great defense with a solid offense. When it comes to these two, you know what you’re going to get every night. Their floors are much higher than Kentucky, Arkansas or Alabama floors, but even at their best they don’t impress me. I wouldn’t bet on either one.

Georgia is firmly in the NCAA Tournament, but I don’t see them as a team capable of winning enough to make a big noise in the SEC.

Everyone else below the Bulldogs in the SEC will be a fun bubble watch. If the season ended today, Texas A&M, Texas and Missouri are currently in the tournament, but a bid thief would put their spots in serious jeopardy. They all need to win at least one game in the SEC Tournament to qualify for the dance, and even then they might need a little more help.

Auburn is technically the last team in the SEC that could be an at-large selection, but realistically they would need to win at least two or three games to be an at-large selection. They are currently one game ahead of .500, and it would be an absolute mistake on the committee’s part to take a big spot on a Miami team that lost in the MAC Championship.

Florida will probably win the SEC Tournament, but I think Arkansas is the best bet at +900.
