The Magic City nightclub has been known for both its female and popular sections for decades, but some couldn’t reconcile the idea of promoting a strip club within the “family atmosphere” promoted by the NBA, as the Hawks planned to do on March 16.

“When we became aware of the Atlanta Hawks’ promotion plans, we reached out to Hawks management to better understand their plans and rationale,” Silver’s statement said. “While we appreciate the team’s perspective and desire to move forward, we have heard significant concerns from a variety of league stakeholders, including fans, partners and employees. I believe canceling this promotion is the right decision for the broader NBA community.”

San Antonio Spurs star Luke Cornette spoke out against the evening’s festivities and urged the league to “protect and respect women.”

“The NBA must protect and respect the women who work diligently every day to create the best basketball league in the world,” Kornet wrote. “We must create an atmosphere of protection and respect for the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers and partners we know and love.”
