Genesco reports higher Q4 sales and profits on travel growth

US-based footwear retailer Genesco has reported higher sales and profit for the fourth quarter (Q4) for the period ending 31 January 2026, supported by strong comparable sales and performance at its Journeys and Schuh banners.

Fourth-quarter net sales rose 7% to $799.9 million in fiscal 2026.

Net income rose to $47.6 million from $34.3m a year ago, while diluted earnings per share (EPS) increased from $3.06 to $4.43.

Operating income rose 11% to $51.3 million.

The revenue increase reflected a 9% increase in comparable sales, including a 9% gain in same-store sales and an 8% increase in e-commerce comparable sales, with favorable foreign exchange effects.

Decline in wholesale sales and the impact of net store closures dampened growth to some extent.

Travel sales were up 10% in the quarter, while Show rose 9% and Johnston & Murphy recorded a 2% gain.

These gains were partially offset by a 27% decrease, or $10 million, in Genesco Brands. On a constant currency basis, Schuh sales increased 3%.

E-commerce represents 31% of retail sales, compared to 30% a year ago.

During the quarter, the company opened six stores and closed 15, ending with 1,236 stores compared to 1,278 last year.

For fiscal 2026, net sales rose 5% to $2.43bn, while comparable sales rose 6%.

The company reported net income of $13.3 million, compared to a net loss of $18.8 million in fiscal 2025, with operating income up 24% to $17.3 million.

Genesco Chairman, President and CEO Mimi E. Vaughan said: “Travel once again led the way last year with double-digit comp growth, fueled by exceptional holiday performance.

“Meanwhile, Johnston & Murphy’s comparable sales improved month-on-month as the show navigated a UK promotional environment and ended the year with clean inventory.”

For fiscal 2027, Genesco expects comparable sales growth of 1% to 2%, with total sales expected to be flat to below 1% year-over-year.

Adjusted diluted earnings per share are forecast at $1.90 to $2.30.
