Carney, Trump speak as Iran war escalates and oil prices soar – National


Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump spoke on Sunday afternoon in response to global tensions as the Iran war escalates and spreads across the region.

The two discussed “the economy, developments in the Middle East and trade relations between the two countries,” a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.

The two also agreed to “keep in close contact.”

The Prime Minister’s Office said on Sunday that Carney convened an incident response group with ministers and senior officials to discuss the ongoing war in Iran and the Middle East.

The Incident Response Group is a federal co-ordinating body that brings together a number of ministers, senior officials and agencies that respond to major emergencies involving the country.

The incident response group “reviewed potential changes to the threat landscape in Canada and emphasized the importance of continued vigilance to enhance domestic security,” the statement said.

It added that the meeting “focused on efforts to protect Canadians in the region and work with partners to de-escalate the conflict.”

“Canada was not consulted, did not participate and has no plans to participate in the aggressive actions against Iran being undertaken by the US and Israel,” read a separate statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

“The initial conflict spread widely as a result of attacks by Iran and its proxies on other countries in the wider Middle East.”
