Tua Tagovailoa’s release sets new NFL record

The NFL’s new league year unofficially begins Monday when the legal tampering window opens. Teams across the league are finalizing major decisions including trades, re-signings and releases.

On Monday morning, the Miami Dolphins announced their intention to release quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. This move marks a fresh start for the Dolphins under a new head coach and current quarterback.

Tagovailoa’s release also set a new NFL record. The Dolphins will take a massive $99 million dead cap hit, the largest in league history.

Russell Wilson previously held the record after absorbing an $85 million hit when the Denver Broncos released him in 2024. Miami, like Denver, has designated Tagovailoa’s departure as a cut after June 1.

This designation allows the Dolphins to expand their cap space over two seasons. Miami will absorb at least $67 million of that total in 2026, according to Over The Cap metrics.

The Dolphins have also been linked to Green Bay Packers quarterback Malik Willis, who will begin accepting offers on Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, Tagovailoa has drawn interest from teams like the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings.

The costly move is a reminder of how quickly things can change in the NFL. Four years ago, Tagovailoa led Miami to the first of two playoff appearances.

Now both sides are looking for a new beginning and making history.
