Gibson stopped all 21 shots he faced through the first two periods. But the Devils’ Timo Meier pushed Detroit’s Lucas Raymond into Gibson late in the second period. Cam Talbot relieved Gibson of an unknown injury to start the third period and made 10 saves.
This was the Red Wings’ first combined shutout since March 2019 (Jonathan Bernier and Jimmy Howard).
Defenseman Moritz Seider had a goal and two assists, James van Riemsdyk had a goal each and Dominik Shine scored his first career goal for the Red Wings, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Patrick Kane had two assists.
Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 shots for New Jersey, which had its four-game winning streak snapped.
Seider gave Detroit a 1-0 lead 3:20 into the game when he beat Markstrom on the short sideline from the right point. Just inside the blue line, Seider placed a fadeaway fluttering wrist shot that was screened by the Red Wings’ Andrew Copp in front of the New Jersey goalie.
van Riemsdyk’s power-play goal made it 2-0 6:37 into the second period. He tipped Seider’s aerial shot in the right spot. It was Detroit’s fourth power play goal in its last 34 power play opportunities.
The Devils made two posts in the middle.
Markstrom made a nice glove save on a partial breakaway by defenseman Justin Faulk with 4:23 left in the second period.
Faulk was traded to St. Louis at the trade deadline on Friday. Made his Red Wings debut after being acquired from the St. Louis Blues. Faulk was also there at 19:28.
