Mandatory Credit: Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images Four Spurs scored 20 or more points, led by Victor Wembanyama’s 29 points, and host San Antonio scored 20 or more points as host San Antonio earned a 145-120 win over the Houston Rockets in a sweep of the Lone Star State on Sunday.
The Spurs have scored the most points in a game this season and have won four straight games and 15 of their last 16 contests as they continue to chase Oklahoma City for first place in the Western Conference.
San Antonio took control of Sunday’s game with a lively second quarter that built a 12-point lead at halftime. The Spurs extended the margin to 27 points when Stephen Castle hit a 3-pointer with 5:45 to play in the third quarter to take a 110-94 advantage heading into the final period.
Houston got within 12 points early in the fourth quarter, but got no closer as the Spurs came back to power and pulled away with a lead of as many as 30 points in the final minutes.
Castle added 23 points for San Antonio, De’Aaron Fox finished with 20 points and 10 assists, Keldon Johnson also had 20 points, Dylan Harper had 19 points and Julian Champagne had 11 points. The Spurs shot 58 percent from the floor, made 21 of 40 3-point attempts and won the first three games of a six-game homestand.
Kevin Durant and Amen Thompson led Houston with 23 points each. Reed Sheppard and Jabari Smith Jr. each scored 17 points and Alperen Sengun had 16 points. The Rockets have bounced between wins and losses in their last six games and are 7.5 games behind San Antonio in the West standings.
Durant hit a floater and two free throws to give the Rockets a 33-32 lead 12 minutes into the game to close the first quarter.
San Antonio quickly jumped out to a lead, building an 11-point lead on two occasions, most recently on Castle’s turnaround jumper 7:46 into the second period. The Rockets cut the deficit to 55-49 on a hook shot by Sengun 2 1/2 minutes before San Antonio responded, then used a throwback 3-pointer by Wembanyama to take a 69-57 advantage at the break.
Harper led all scorers with 17 points through halftime while Wembanyama added 15 points. Durant’s 11 points paced Houston in the first half, while Thompson and Sheppard each had 10 points.
San Antonio put the game away at the 2:15 mark of the third quarter, going on a 9-2 run to take a 78-59 lead on Champagne’s bank jumper.
