Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Iranian citizens to overthrow the Islamic regime, saying that Tel Aviv “will create the conditions for the brave people of Iran to liberate themselves.”

In a video message on X, Netanyahu said that “we will strike thousands of targets” in the coming days, signaling Israel’s willingness to continue fighting. His announcement comes after coordinated US-Israeli strikes on Saturday killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several leaders in Iran’s political and military chain of command.

His message is the following:

“In the coming days we will attack thousands of targets of the terrorist regime.
We will create the conditions for the brave people of Iran to free themselves from the chains of tyranny.
And that is why I address you once again:
Oh citizens of Iran, do not miss this opportunity.
This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity.
Don’t sit idly by, because your time will soon come.
The moment when you must take to the streets, take to the streets by the millions to finish the job, to overthrow the regime of terror that has embittered your lives.
Your sufferings and sacrifices will not be in vain.
The help I longed for has already arrived.
Help has arrived and now the time has come to unite for a historic mission.
Oh citizens of Iran, Persians, Kurds, Azeris, Ahwazis and Baluchis!
“Now is the time to join forces to overthrow the regime and secure its future.”

Who runs Iran?

Ayatollah Arafi, a close collaborator of Khamenei, has been appointed to temporarily lead Iran. Arafi, a seasoned cleric, currently serves as vice president of the Assembly of Experts, the body that appoints the Supreme Leader.

He has also been a member of the influential Guardian Council, the body responsible for vetting electoral candidates and reviewing legislation passed by parliament. Tehran has a long list of hardliners to replace its “martyred” leaders in an establishment that has crystallized over nearly five decades.

According to a NYT According to the report, Ali Larijani, the country’s top national security official and former IRGC commander, has been effectively running the country.

What did Donald Trump say?

US President Donald Trump had earlier issued a statement along similar lines, calling on the Iranian public to “take control of their destiny.”

Trump has issued a new statement, warning Iran not to hit back: “Iran just declared that they are going to hit very hard today, harder than ever before… However, they better not do it, because if they do, we will hit them with a force that has never been seen before.”
