No. 9 Nebraska ties program win record with OT win over Iowa

No. 9 Nebraska earned the second seed in the Big Ten Tournament after defeating Iowa 84-75 in overtime in the regular-season finale between the two teams on Sunday in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Cornhuskers (26-5, 15-5 Big Ten) tied the program record for wins in a season while also extending the conference record for wins in a season.

After the score was tied at 75 in overtime, Nebraska rolled to a 9-0 win over Iowa (20-11, 10-10).

Cale Jacobsen hit a 3-pointer for Nebraska’s 78-75 lead with 1:30 left in overtime. Jacobsen had made 12 3-pointers before the finale, but only made two in overtime. His first 3-pointer put Nebraska ahead 73-70.

Nebraska senior Sam Hoiberg added a dry-up layup for an 80-75 Cornhuskers lead with 52.8 seconds left. Hoiberg, a son of Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg, cut the lead to seven with two free throws 25 seconds later. Jamarques Lawrence finished the game for Nebraska with a steal and layup.

Jacobsen, Sam Hoiberg and Pryce Sandfort each had 15 points and Rienk Mast added 14 for the Cornhuskers.

Trailing 70-62 in regulation, Iowa’s Kael Combs scored all eight of his points in the final 1:08 of regulation to personally lead the Hawkeyes’ comeback in regulation. He hit a tying 3-pointer with 9 seconds left in the game.

Combs and Cooper Koch each had 18 points to pace Iowa. Tavion Banks added 12 and Bennett Stirtz added 11.

Nebraska led 30-26 at halftime, and both teams committed 19 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Nebraska’s defense converted eight of its 11 steals in the first half.

Tied at 10-10, the Cornhuskers took a 17-12 lead with 8 minutes, 51 seconds left on a dunk by Berke Buyuktuncel, a 3-pointer by Jared Garcia and a free throw by Braden Frager.

The Hawkeyes cut the deficit to 25-24 and 27-26, but with 1:09 left, Lawrence’s timely pass to Buyuktuncel followed with a layup and free throw for a 30-26 lead.
