Anders Dreyer’s 39th-minute goal was all Duran Perry and the San Diego defense needed to secure a 1-0 win over Sporting Kansas City in a Western Conference game last Saturday in Kansas City.

Perry had to stop just three shots and got a lot of help from his teammates to secure San Diego FC’s (3-0-0, 9 points) third straight clean sheet, and started the season in perfect fashion with three wins while holding opponents scoreless for a full 270 minutes.

Sporting goalie John Pulskamp was heroic, stopping four shots when San Diego’s offense found space against the Kansas City defense.

Neither team had a shot on target until Dreyer found the net, taking Onni Valakari’s pass from just outside the box and curling a shot past Pulskamp to the left of the goal to put San Diego up. Luca Bombino also earned an assist on the pass that started the scoring play.

Fullscamp was brought in immediately after receiving Balacari’s header in the 42nd minute, but took the game with a desperate kick save.

Sporting (0-1-2, 1 goal) finally scored in the 45th minute when Dejan Jobeljic had a high-percentage chance, and Perry stopped on the doorstep to help the team continue its winning streak and take a one-goal lead into halftime.

San Diego showed an aggressive attitude in the second half, with Balakary aiming for the outside of the right post with a fierce shot in the 53rd minute, and Dreyer hitting a high percentage of shots against Fullscamp three minutes later. The Sporting goalkeeper denied Dreyer again in the 67th and 76th minutes, the latter when the ball was deflected off his left forearm.

Taylor Calheira almost provided Sporting’s equalizer in the 88th minute, turning his back on a defender and rolling to Perry before firing a weak shot towards goal that the San Diego goalkeeper flew wide to his right at the last minute.

Stephen Arifa also forced a save from Ferree in added time but failed to find the net.
