Mandatory Credit: Michael Caterina-Imagn Image Fred Payne had 24 points and nine rebounds in Boston College’s 77-69 Atlantic Coast Conference win over Notre Dame on Saturday in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Boston College (11-20, 4-14 ACC) shot 36.4 percent from the field (20 of 55) but outscored Notre Dame 31-14 at the free throw line.
Chase Forte added 14 points for the Eagles, who trailed by nine points early in the second half.
Notre Dame (13-18, 4-14) stretched its lead to four with 1:16 left, but couldn’t get any closer. The Fighting Irish were looking for their first road win since a 47-40 win at Stanford on Dec. 30.
Jalen Haralson led Notre Dame with 21 points. The Fighting Irish got 14 points from Braeden Shrewsberry and 10 points and 11 rebounds from Brady Koehler. Cole Certa also got 10 points.
Boston College guard Donald Hand Jr. was helped off the court with 4:45 left in the first half due to a right leg injury and did not return to the game. Hand played in his fourth game since returning from a right leg injury suffered in a Feb. 11 loss to Stanford. Hand entered Saturday’s game as Boston College’s second-leading scorer (12.6 ppg).
The Fighting Irish shot 35.5% from the field.
Notre Dame took an 8-0 lead on a Koehler basket with 2:53 left in the first half to take a 30-21 lead. Boston College did not score a field goal in the final nine minutes of the first half, but the score was tied 33-30 at halftime.
Neither team shot the ball well in the first 20 minutes. Notre Dame was 10 of 28 (35.7%) from the field and Boston College was 8 of 29 (27.6%). The Eagles made 12 of 15 free throw attempts to keep things close.
Notre Dame led by nine points early in the second half, but Boston College went on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 41. The Eagles took the lead for the first time in the second half after Payne’s 3-pointer made it 55-53 with 8:08 left in the game. Boston College led 61-53 with 5:27 to play.
