Kevin O’Leary says a 20-year-old can retire rich if they invest $1K in an index fund and forget about it for the rest of their lives.

Most financial advice can quickly become complicated. Charts, market timing, tracking the next big thing. “Shark Tank” investor Kevin O’Leary thinks a 20-year-old with just $1,000 can walk away from it all.

In a YouTube clip, O’Leary outlines what he believes is the simplest way to build long-term wealth.

“What’s the smartest thing a 20-year-old can do with $1,000? It’s pretty simple,” O’Leary said. “Put it in a stock index and forget about it for the rest of your life until you retire.”

Long game, not quick wins

O’Leary pointed to broad-market index funds, specifically those that track the S&P 500, as a cornerstone of the strategy.

“The stock market, an index like the S&P 500, grows 10 to 12% every year, every year of your life,” he said. “There are some years where it’s flat, but if you look at the last 100-plus years, it’s been almost double-digit returns most of the time.”

The idea is not to trade, react or follow trends. It should start early, leave the money invested and allow the compound to work for decades.

But O’Leary emphasized that the initial $1,000 is just the starting point.

A real wealth builder adds to this

The part that most people miss, according to O’Leary, is consistently donating more money over time.

“So that’s how you retire wealth,” he said. “You take a thousand and you add a little bit every week, usually 50% of your salary, and you retire with a million dollars by the time you’re 65.”

Starting at age 20 and continuing to retirement age changes the math dramatically. Even modest weekly contributions can snowball over four decades thanks to compound returns.

“Start at 20, finish at 65,” O’Leary said. “It works.”

The message is simple but powerful. The earlier one starts investing and continuously adds to it, the more they have to rely on market timing, risky bets or unexpected windfalls to build wealth. Over time, patience and discipline can do the heavy lifting
