Google says Anthropic AI will remain available on Google Cloud regardless of the Pentagon’s threat designation

Google said it would continue to offer artificial intelligence models from Anthropic to customers through its cloud platform, except for defense-related work, a day after Microsoft issued a similar statement.

The announcements by two of the world’s largest cloud infrastructure companies follow the US Department of Defense’s designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk.

A Google spokesperson said Friday that the decision will not prevent the company from working with Anthropic on defense-related projects, and that its products will remain available through platforms such as Google Cloud.

Claude Anthropic models are available on Google Cloud via the Vertex AI platform. Google is also a financial backer of the company. In January 2025, the search giant made an additional $1 billion investment in Anthropic, adding $2 billion to its previous stake.

Anthropic uses Google Cloud infrastructure to train its models, and recently expanded its partnership with the company to gain access to up to one million custom Google Tensor Processing Units.

The dispute began after Anthropic refused to agree to new terms requested by the US Department of Defense regarding the use of AI systems.

Following the controversy, President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s technology. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth later said the Pentagon would stop working with the company within six months.

Some defense technology companies have already told employees to stop using Anthropic’s Claude models and switch to alternatives from rival providers like OpenAI.

Microsoft was the first major cloud partner to confirm that it would continue to support Anthropic products despite the Pentagon designation.

Microsoft said Thursday that its lawyers reviewed the designation and concluded that Anthropic products, including Claude, could be available to customers other than the War Department.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said the company plans to challenge the supply chain risk designation in court.

A report late Friday confirmed that Amazon will also continue to offer Anthropic artificial intelligence technology to its cloud customers, except for jobs involving the Department of Defense.
