Downing-Imagn Image Nikola Jokic overcame nine turnovers with 28 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds, and the host Denver Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Lakers 120-113 in a crucial Western Conference matchup Thursday night.
Lakers star LeBron James reached another milestone in his 23rd season, scoring 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting. James was two nights behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in NBA history for making a field goal and passed the all-time mark with a 12-foot turnaround jumper in the first quarter.
But James wasn’t done playing. He left with 3:58 left in the fourth quarter after sinking a layup, falling to the floor and injuring his left elbow. Los Angeles’ Deandre Ayton was sidelined in the first quarter due to a knee injury. Coach JJ Reddick had no real updates on either player after the game.
Jamal Murray scored 28 points for the Nuggets and Luka Doncic had 27 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for the Lakers.
Warriors 115, Rockets 113 (OT)
De’Anthony Melton converted a second-chance goal with 5.3 seconds left, giving a shorthanded Golden State an overtime win in Houston.
Melton finished the game with 23 points and 6 rebounds for the Warriors, who were without Stephen Curry and Kristaps Porzingis. Brandin Podziemski paced the Warriors with 26 points and nine rebounds, including five early in overtime to take a 111-106 lead.
Reed Shepherd led the Rockets with 30 points, six 3-pointers and six assists, while Kevin Durant added 23 points. Amen Thompson scored 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Magic 115, Mavericks 114
Wendell Carter Jr. threw down a dunk with 1.4 seconds left as Orlando beat visiting Dallas and Cooper Flagg’s return to the lineup was thwarted.
Dallas took a 114-110 lead on Flagg’s 3-point play with 37.3 seconds left and Jalen Suggs’ 3-pointer. Flagg missed a 14-foot jumper ahead of Carter’s game-winner, and Dallas had no chance on the final play. Tristan da Silva scored 19 points and Suggs added 17 for Orlando, which won for the fourth time in its last six games.
Klay Thompson led Dallas with 24 points off the bench and hit a season-high seven 3-pointers. Khris Middleton scored 19 points, while Flagg and PJ Washington each had 18 points.
Spurs 121, Pistons 106
Victor Wembanyama had 38 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks as San Antonio opened a six-game homestand with a decisive win over Detroit.
The Spurs have won two straight and 13th in their last 14 games. Two of those wins came against the Eastern Conference-leading Pistons. San Antonio went up by as many as 19 points in the first half and took a 71-55 lead into the second half, setting the tone. De’Aaron Fox had 29 points for the Spurs.
Cade Cunningham had 26 points for Detroit, which recorded its second straight outing after falling behind 8-1. Pistons’ Ausar Thompson was forced out of the game in the first quarter with a sprained right ankle and did not return.
Hits 126, Nets 110
Kel’el Ware tied career highs with 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks and added five steals to help host Miami beat Brooklyn.
The Heat, who are on a three-game winning streak, also got 25 points from Tyler Herro and 21 points from Bam Adebayo. Miami played all three games without leading scorer Norman Powell (groin).
Michael Porter Jr. posted game-highs in points (27) and rebounds (13), but the Nets have lost 10 straight games, the longest active skid in the NBA. Brooklyn trailed 1-40 after the third quarter.
Bulls 105, Suns 103
Collin Sexton scored a season-high 30 points, Tre Jones added 21 and Chicago never won in Phoenix.
Guerschon Yabusele had 16 points and Rob Dillingham added 11 off the bench for the Bulls. The Bulls held on after cutting a 12-point lead to one with six minutes left. Chicago’s Nick Richards attempted a free throw with 4.4 seconds left, and when he missed his second chance, the Bulls controlled the loose ball as time ran out.
Devin Booker scored 27 points and Grayson Allen added 21 for the Suns, who ended their two-game winning streak.
Timberwolves 115, Raptors 107
Anthony Edwards scored 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting, and Minnesota earned a win over Toronto in Minneapolis.
Rudy Gobert added 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who have won their fifth straight game. Julius Randle finished with 17 points and eight boards.
RJ Barrett scored 25 points on 9-for-14 shooting to lead the Raptors, who lost for the fourth time in their last five games. Immanuel Quickley scored 18 points.
Jazz 122, Wizard 112
Ace Bailey tied a career-high in points with 32 points to help Utah end a seven-game losing streak with a win at Washington.
Isaiah Collier finished with 27 points and 11 assists for the Jazz, while Kyle Filiposki added 20 points and 14 rebounds.
Trae Young made his Wizards debut after being acquired in a trade with Atlanta last January. He recorded 12 points and 6 assists in 19 minutes. Rookie Julian Reese led Washington with career-highs of 18 points and 20 rebounds as the Wizards lost their seventh straight game.
Pelicans 133, Kings 123
Zion Williamson scored 23 points, six teammates scored in double figures, and visiting New Orleans used a big third quarter to keep Sacramento at arm’s length.
Trey Murphy III had 21 points and Saddiq Bey had 20 for the Pelicans, who snapped a two-game losing streak and earned their 20th win of the season.
Precious Achiuwa tied her career high with a game-high 29 points for the Kings. The Kings have lost three straight games this season, becoming the first 50-loss team in the league.
