The senior from No. 20 Arkansas scored a career-high 28 points in the Razorbacks’ impressive 105-85 win over Texas on Wednesday night.
“It feels good to have a strong performance,” Brazil said after winning. “Even though the season is not over, there is still a lot left in the season and many goals I want to achieve. Still, it felt good to finish the last game well.”
Brazil and Arkansas close out the regular season Saturday at Missouri and aim to secure the second seed for next week’s SEC Tournament.
A win over the Tigers (20-10, 10-7) and Alabama’s loss to Auburn would give the Razorbacks (22-8, 12-5) the No. 2 seed.
Arkansas was feeling good, especially after starting the game against the Longhorns on a 19-4 run. The Razorbacks want to continue playing like a championship contender.
“This is why we did what we did all year, which was to get to March and make sure we were playing like we were one of those teams,” coach John Calipari said. “Tonight was important.”
Missouri is aiming to right the ship after Tuesday night’s 80-64 loss to Oklahoma, averaging 17.4 points per game and despite 17 points from Mark Mitchell, who was SEC Player of the Week last week.
Missouri lost its chance to be a top four seed in the tournament with the loss to the Sooners, and is in position to drop as low as a 10 seed depending on how it plays out against Arkansas.
The loss was especially big at this time of the year, but Missouri coach Dennis Gates was confident his team would bounce back.
“Our guys are going to regroup. We’re going to go back and debrief and see what we need to do better,” Gates said on the Tiger Radio Network after the game. “But ultimately, it was a game where we shot ourselves in the foot. We gave up 25 points off turnovers, 16 of them.”
That problem plagued the Tigers in their last meeting with Arkansas. Missouri lost 94-86 to the Razorbacks on Feb. 21 and was outscored 18-6 in turnover points. Mitchell scored 26 points in the loss.
Missouri is averaging 79.7 points per game and allowing 74.8 points per game. Jayden Stone (13.7) and Trent Pierce (10.6) were also major contributors.
Arkansas, which got 28 points and 13 assists from Darius Acuff Jr. in its win over Texas, is hoping to close out the season with its fourth win in its last five games. Acuff is averaging a team-high 22.2 points per game.
The Razorbacks struggled early against Missouri in their last meeting, trailing 35-28 with 5:20 left in the first half before closing on a 19-6 run.
Brazile ranks third in scoring with 12.9 points per contest and is excited about the potential of this Arkansas team.
“We still have a lot we want to accomplish,” Brazile said. “I don’t want to say too much as there is a lot of season left.”
